About The Raymonds

During our past seven years together (five living in an apartment, the rest in our own house), we’ve grown a new appreciation for Mother Nature and all that she has to offer. We’ve also become enamored with doing things “homemade” instead of the “easy way.” We’re hoping to eventually turn out little piece of Maine into a self-sufficient homestead and are making slow gains in this direction.

Currently have a full family of Kitana (goldfish), Christine (lovebird), Belle (Border Collie mix), Jacks (mini-rex), and Ashes (Maine coon-cat mix). While all these animals and their different needs make for a busy day, we absolutely love it! We are hoping in the near future to add fowl to our family for egg purposes.

What is “Modern Homesteading?”

Modern Homesteading is a term that I use to roughly describe how we’re trying to build our lifestyle. While trying to use the land and become as self-sufficient as possible, there are certain things that we (or more so Tasha) just can’t do with out. Examples include: indoor plumbing, the internet, lights. I guess the big one is indoor plumbing. There are also a few things we just can’t do, no matter what life comes down to, such as slaughtering animals on our own. This is why we call it “modern homesteading;” we’re taking a way of life and tweaking it a bit to fit our personal preferences. It’s kind of New Media like, in a way. 🙂

  1. Cool idea. My husband and I are working to get our own farm or small ranch. Right now we have dogs, chickens, tractors, a garden, and a little land. Good luck with your modern homestead.

  2. Good luck to you as well! It’s amazing what you can do with a small piece of land and stick-to-it-iveness.
